Andres Manuel del Rio Award

Andrés Manuel del Río (Madrid, 1764 – Ciudad de México,1849) was a prominent chemist and mineralogist, best known for discovering the element vanadium in 1801. While working in Spain, he initially identified the element in a sample of Mexican mineral and named it “pantherite”. However, his finding was dismissed by his peers, who wrongly attributed his sample to chromium, thus being his discovery overshadowed by the work of the Swedish chemist Nils Gabriel Sefström, who rediscovered vanadium in 1830. Although his acknowledgement on vanadium discovery had to wait, his legacy in the scientific community, especially in the development of the understanding of transition metal ions, is still recognized today.
